It’s hard to imagine that amid the chaos that is Bangkok and the din that threatens to drown every intelligible utterance, relaxation can be had. More than that, the city is scattered with spas that promise (and usually deliver) rejuvenation and regeneration in soothing surroundings. While most of the luxurious spas are part of hotel outlets, there are private businesses that offer massages and wellness programs in old, grand residences set in lush tropical gardens.
Thai spas are destinations for pure relaxation. Unlike their western counterparts, there is nothing clinical or cold about them. Usually done in Thai style, the compounds and the treatment rooms are created and outfitted in accordance to Thai interior aesthetics, often specifically Lanna. From the moment you walk in, it’s immediate calming of the mind, the body, and the senses.
The treatments available are not strictly Thai (since traditional Thai massage is not necessarily relaxing to everyone). Most spas offer an extensive menu that includes Western and Asian techniques as well as house blends of the two. The sessions, often comprising one body treatment and one massage, help alleviate stress, recover inner balance, and revitalize the spirit.
The best way to end your Bangkok holiday is to indulge in one of these spa sanctuaries where you can retreat from the frenetic pace of the city in tranquil settings. Whether massage or meditation, calm returns; all the better to get you going in your post-holiday life.

Banyan Tree Spa
Perched on the 21st floor of a building that houses the Banyan Tree Hotel, this is truly Bangkok’s only spa with a panoramic view
of the city. As soon as you step out of the elevator, you know you’re in for an unforgettable experience. The Banyan Tree Spa is one
of those places where you can really check your fatigue at the door. Its massages such as the Sukhothai and Lomi Lomi are
indescribable. You know you will leave completely rejuvenated.

The Oriental Spa
The journey itself can be a foretaste of things to come. To reach the spa, which is situated across from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel,
you’d have to take a boat to cross the Chao Phraya River. The spa itself is often considered the ultimate retreat for wellness and
relaxation. Treatments are dispensed in fourteen luxurious suites, designed to encourage long-hour stays. It is one of the few spas
that offer Ayurvedic healing in a dedicated space known as The Ayurvedic Penthouse.

Devarana Spa
The walk through its small garden, up the stairs, and onto an ethereal catwalk that leads to the spa’s reception immediately paves
the way to a relaxing time. Although located in the heart of Bangkok, the tranquil and quiet setting of this spa belies its mundane
location: inside the Dusit Thani hotel at the junction of Rama IV and Silom roads. Indoors, a total spa experience can be had in
each of the self-contained suites.

Divana Nurture Spa
An old white house in a verdant setting is where you’d want to be to break away from Bangkok’s concrete-and-glass city madness.
And when you can take an outdoor floral bath after a massage, you know you can unwind undisturbed. With treatments named
after its green theme (Wildflower Compress, Siamese Scent), this is not only a place to be at one with nature, it’s a retreat for
rediscovering one’s inner peace.

Suk Spa
With its unabashedly Thai interior, you may think you’re in someone’s home up north, away from bustling Bangkok. Suk Spa is
in a world of its own—18th century Siam perhaps! The treatments (and the way they treat you) are charmingly old-fashioned:
banana-leaf wraps and herbal oils conjure images of a time when such pampering is not a rare treat, but a regular therapy
administered by experienced hands.

Thann Sanctuary
At first a spa product retailer, Thann has created a synergistic extension to its main business. The spa, within its beautiful retail
outlets, is small, but its size allows it to offer services quite unrivalled even by larger establishments. Unsurprisingly, the therapists
use only Thann products and these are also available for use in the bath and dressing area, allowing you to leave the spa feeling
and smelling wonderful.

Health Land
The Goliath of spas, Health Land is probably the only venue in Bangkok that can take in a tour group. The treatment rooms are
line-up like offices and inside, they’re comfortable but not luxurious (some are large enough to accommodate up to 7 people!).
What extras you do not get are more than made up for by its attractive prices. This place is extremely popular. Reservation is
highly recommended.
